I've found this to be true as well. Just letting someone know that you need extra help and patience can do wonders.

Too true Mere.

As an addendum, I had an interesting conversation with my sister, Sadye, last night where we explored the parallel to a drowning person. Often when someone is drowning they can pose a significant risk to their rescuer. Instinct compels the drowning person to climb the rescuer thereby jeopardizing the rescuers safety.

Can you ask the drowning victim to calm down and ask for help? Not really. But you can train the rescuer to approach the victim with a strategic maneuver.

On the other hand, if you find yourself drowning on a regular basis, it may be time for swimming lessons. That's more the point that I was trying to get at.

Sometimes, asking and allowing someone to help you is a gift to them!
