Documenting Mom's Art – Day 1 & 2

At my mom’s studio in Occidental, California. The weather is fantastic and the air is rich with summer pollen. Monday was spent cleaning the studio and procuring photo lighting. Tuesday morning I had to drive back to shutterbug and complain about the broken light and faulty remote trigger. It was a pain but i got stuff replaced including a second photo umbrella for diffusing light.

After a while, my sister Sadye and I got a rhythm going of taking photos with sizes, media, dates, and if possible titles. Unfortunately, I’ve come to realize that my camera is no longer in its prime. The lens is only ok and the SLR function is a little slowed down causing images to get shadows at high speeds.
I’ve also realized that strobe lighting is not ideal for art photography. I should have gotten regular lights. Argh.

Anyway, my friend Tim loaned me his Olympus camera which has a much higher resolution. Saddly it’s also not working perfectly with this lighting but it’s a step up.
I really wish I just had a super fabulous camera that had an extremely accurate zoom lens. Then i would be able to stand at the back of the room and avoid distortion but get great detail.

Egh. C’est la vie!

Self Portrait in 1997… that’s the year she learned she had breast cancer… wonder if this portrait was before or after she learned about it.

This is an Encaustic piece (wax). I had to pick mouse poop out of it with a needle for 20 minutes before shooting it.

I love how Sadye and I both missed the spelling of collage.

I love this piece! The colors aren’t quite right in this photo, will need to adjust. Probably will frame and take home.

This was our first piece. Looks like we got the colors down.. Curious to see what this looks like on shane’s new computer. It’s vibrant on mine.

Me on mom’s roof.  We needed to stabilize the light so i had to put trashbags on the skylights.  Figured i should sweep while i’m up there.
