This whole series, "So You Want To Be A Contractor". Is FANTASTIC! I really appreciated this post particularly because it provides a concrete "formula" for what was more of a gut instinct.

Thanks,

Josh

I did a quick post about how to integrate this into my project management application, Redmine.

Another good point to add is "education". What will we learn from doing this project? Is this something we want to learn? Will this education be more valuable in the long term or the short term?

Yes! Great blog - Peter and I were also thinking of putting together a short questionnaire to be filled out during every initial project briefing with a client to make sure that there's documented notes on the project for whoever the project gets passed to... kinda like a cover letter to a report. The question springs to mind, "how much preparatory research, paperwork, notes, and questionnaires are too much"... or rather, when do good intentions become red tape? I'd say never as long as they provide some sort of value that is otherwise missing - It can't ever really hurt to have a nice beefy list of notes (from the designer's & the PM's perspective) to read before starting a project. The more preparation, thought, and research that any of us can put into the initial phases of the project will ultimately yield more high quality, "on task" finished projects where everyone can feel like they've struck gold (including the client). Glad ya posted this one :)
