Hi I am using SEO by Yoast plugin for permalink rewrite.
After upgrade to you 3.0.3 Version (pro version) I face the problem that your new calendar http://www.bedmintonove-potreby.sk/udalosti/ creates too many 404 error pages as you can see here: http://awesomescreenshot.com/05d1naxxb6

In case you need it, I can provide you with full list of links. The problem is caused by your calendar because Google crawls also years in the history.

Because I am not a develper I need help with following:

Dates in the history must have set up – no index
Current dates – cannonical to avoid duplicate content
And all venues need no follow for outbound links.

Is this set up possible in your plugin – or could you help me what kind of code to add /and where/ to fix this?

Hey there alzbetkai. Thanks for your note here, and for upgrading the plugin – we apologize for the inconvenience you’ve faced on this front so far.

Based on how you’ve described the problem, this does sound like an issue a few other users have reported related to Yoast SEO right here: https://tri.be/support/forums/topic/webmaster-tools-404-crawl-errors-recurring-events-feed-and-upcoming-events-page. Does that sound familiar to the types of links you’re seeing on your end? Do the solutions presented therein provide any value?

There’s also a related 404 issue we’re working on as described in https://tri.be/support/forums/topic/numerous-404-errors-reported-via-google-webmaster-tools/, which may have some value when addressed as well. But let me know and we’ll try to advise if it’s a different situation than outlined above.

    Hi Rob,
I read both topics you mentioned in your previous post.

Both of them are not helpful, but I think my problem is the same as listed here https://tri.be/support/forums/topic/webmaster-tools-flooded-with-404s/#post-55393 and maybe also this one https://theeventscalendar.com/support/forums/topic/404-not-found-in-page-title/#post-54160 BUT

    1. this fix http://pastebin.com/r1WVsCuL should be pasted here: wp-content/themes/YOUR-THEME/tribe-events/month/single-day.php when I check my FTP connection, the problem is there is no \”tribe-events/ folder as you can see here http://easycaptures.com/fs/uploaded/742/1461013466.png . I also read this https://tri.be/support/documentation/events-calendar-themers-guide/ but I am not developer so I am afraid to create folders and files to live operations, not to crash the site.

    2. in case I can not pase the snippet I am talking about in step 1 I am not sure if is has sense to use this snippet for titles rewrite http://pastebin.com/R6M6HEEW /and also where to paste it? I bought your PRO version/

    3. I added this snippet http://pastebin.com/tu5DEEYQ to functions.php file to this location /wp-content/themes/mystile

Last but not least the Webmaster Tools has only listed pages in this format udalosti/1940-03-28/page/2/ – only the date changes /example: http://awesomescreenshot.com/0091nvj592 I do not understand that, because I set up SEO by Yoast not to index subpages http://awesomescreenshot.com/0c91nvkoac

    So what to do now?

    Hi!

You would indeed need to create the tribe-events directory by yourself.

I appreciate you might be nervous about doing this if you haven’t made such a customization before – ultimately though if you really aren’t confident making changes like this you would either need to wait until we address this in a future maintenance release, or else hire a developer to do it on your behalf – or even take the time to play around with a testing site (so you aren’t impacting on the live site) until you can build some skills and confidence in this area 🙂

The snippet you referenced in point (2) is basically similar to that which you added in point (3) – I suspect you only need the second of those and it sounds like you’ve already got it in place.

I do not know why those particular event pages from the 1940s are being indexed by Webmaster Tools – are you able to drill in and find out where those links are originating?

    Hi Barry,
    steps 2 & 3 are done.

I also created test version of the website /staging/ – please see http://bedmintonov.staging.wpengine.com/udalosti/

I also created the directories where I should upload the single-day.php file as you can see here: http://easycaptures.com/fs/uploaded/742/8790661781.png

Could you please tell me, which file to modify – from which directory and where exactly /which row/ to paste the code? Maybe if you can send me the right one.

And to your question regarding the origin of those links. Go to calendar view http://bedmintonov.staging.wpengine.com/udalosti/ . Insert date 1970-04 to the date filtering field. Click on filter events /ajax is disabled/ and then click for example on 04. April 1970 you will get this http://bedmintonov.staging.wpengine.com/udalosti/1970-04-04/

What I was not able to simulate is this bedmintonov.staging.wpengine.com/udalosti/1970-04/page/2 => I suggest it is just some WordPress function as e.g. Archives. But it is just my guess.

In case you would like to check this further, I can create SFTP access for you, as well as WP login and also invite you into webmaster tools.

In the case of your theme please place the customized single-day.php template in wp-content/themes/mystile/tribe-events/month … so basically it should reside at:

    wp-content/themes/mystile/tribe-events/month/single-day.php

The contents of that file should echo the code you see here – can you confirm that you’re good with these steps so far?

And to your question regarding the origin of those links. Go to calendar view http://bedmintonov.staging.wpengine.com/udalosti/ . Insert date 1970-04 to the date filtering field…

So the above change to single-day.php should resolve the problem with the search engine indexing those days: note that the primary problem there is that you have disabled day view, if you could change your settings to include day view you should not see those 404 pages.

Again, we’re hoping to address this in an upcoming maintenance release.

Ok, I created new file single-day.php with the code you listed above. And uploaded it to the right folder as you can see here http://easycaptures.com/fs/uploaded/742/4265235221.png

Is this fix going to tell Google WT not to index also subpages such as http://www.bedmintonove-potreby.sk/udalosti/1948-06-26/page/2/ ?

I also added day view and week view.

What is still quiet strange is, that when I am here http://www.bedmintonove-potreby.sk/udalosti/week/2013-09/ I can see this http://awesomescreenshot.com/0011nykh47 as soon as I copy the link and pase it to another browser I face the Error 404 – Page not found!

    Out of topic

Is there any chance to change Meta Titles for these pages /SEO by Yoast does not have this option/:
    http://bedmintonov.staging.wpengine.com/udalosti/upcoming/
    http://www.bedmintonove-potreby.sk/udalosti/today/

Great – and looking at http://www.bedmintonove-potreby.sk/udalosti/month/ it seems to be working successfully (’empty’ days are given a nofollow relationship attribute, which will tell search engines not to index them).

No. This was in relation to a different part of the webmaster crawl error problems. For the above issue we would need to determine where it is getting these links from – right now I’m not clear on that.

Week view requests need to have a date that includes the day (ie 2013-09-02), not just the year and month (2013-09). Can you tell me where you are getting that link from?

Is there any chance to change Meta Titles for these pages /SEO by Yoast does not have this option

Please create new threads for new topics! However, we’re unlikely to be able to help with a customization such as this one, as it relates to a third party plugin.

    Thanks!

    Hi Rob!
it looks that this issue wasn’t fixed until now (as I realized when upgrading to 3.8.1.
Can you ticket it, please? Would be nice to get rid of it.

    Best regards,
    Oliver

    Hi Oliver,

Just to be clear – do you mean the presence of 404 notices when looking at a site from Google Webmaster Tools (or similar)?

Sorry, yes. I mean the problem with the 404 notices which is fix by overriding the single-day.php.
(I’m currently using this workaround, but it would be nice just to have it fixed)

Oliver: this should no longer be a problem – our default templates no longer link to empty days.
