What Should I Charge?

Published on: February 29, 2012 |Tags: ,,,,, | Categories: Articles

The most common question I get when speaking to new, and even experienced, freelancers is “What should I charge?”

How should I set my rate?
Hourly or Fixed?
How much will I make this year?

I have a formula I use to raise or lower my rate, as well as some key strategies you can use to set up a good game plan. The key is to be intentional and strategic.

This talk was given at International Freelancers Day 2011.

This is great! I definitely feel like the person you were when you started freelancing … luckily there are professionals to learn from at every step. I usually charge $35/hr and I think it will climb as my skills and solutions become broader in scope just as yours did. BUT what I really like is what you said about paying yourself / charging according to the lifestyle you want. That is a concept I haven’t heard yet and it is what I learned the most out of this video post. Thanks so much!

Thanks for video clearly explained. As Freelancer I started at $35 and increase over 10years my highest is $85. I reside in Sydney Australia in the western suburbs, home studio. Finding lately people are asking for discounts, sign of the times and as it been in my over 20 year experience Graphic Design has always been a competitive professional to be in. It’s a great profession to be in, rewarding if you have the right clients who appreciated you skill and value.

Sadly, while we were working on the book proposal with our agent, there was a bout of fertility and we became deluged with pregnancy, then kids. The book proposal was shelved for the short term.
